Data migration is the process of transferring or moving data from one system to another system. It is not as simple as it sounds. This process involves a change in both the database or application and storage. In the ETL (Extraction, transfer, load) process, data migration will involve transfer and load steps. Extracted data will go through a series of functions in preparation. After that, it can be loaded successfully in a target location.
There can be many underlying reasons for an organization to undertake data migration. They might need to replace servers and storage devices; they might need to overhaul the whole system, merge new data, upgrade databases, or establish a new data warehouse. It can be anything. It is also necessary while deploying another system that is sitting alongside the existing applications.
